WES "Twins" with Harlem Mosque Friday-Saturday, November 18-19
We are excited that under the auspices of our Yad Mordecai Social Action Committee, West End Synagogue will participate with the Masjid Aqsa Mosque of Harlem in the fourth annual Weekend of Twinning, an annual event bringing together members of synagogues and mosques in cities across North America, Europe, Israel and around the world on the same weekend.
On Saturday, November 19, Imam Souleimane Konate of the mosque will give the sermon a West End Synagogue's Shabbat morning service. There has been a lovely article about the imam's work at http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/03/nyregion/03konate.html. The imam will remain after our kiddush luncheon for a 30 minute question and answer period about Islam in our sanctuary.
Last year, the Weekend of Twinning involved over 130 mosques and Muslim organizations and 130 synagogues and Jewish organizations. This year an even larger number of participating mosques and synagogues is expected. The Weekend of Twinning is spearheaded by The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding (FFEU), which strives to build ties between Jews and Muslims worldwide (www.ffeu.org). The president of FFEU is Rabbi Marc Schneier, vice president of the World Jewish Congress, and the chairman is Russell Simmons, the hip-hop impresario.
