Our vision West End Synagogue Hebrew School is a spiritually vibrant center for children and their families to share in the experience of Jewish living and learning. We aim to instill a love of Judaism and Jewish culture in our students, to foster a sense of belonging to community, and to build connections between sacred text and everyday experience, and between synagogue and home. We respect and encourage a diversity of approaches to Jewish observance and study, finding nourishment in the connection with our past while seeking meaning in our lives today. Our approach integrates weekly afternoon classes with special family programs on Shabbat and holidays for children and parents to learn and celebrate together. Afternoon classroom learning one afternoon per week: In small classes taught by experienced, talented and creative teachers, our students engage deeply in Jewish learning. We focus on relevant themes in modern Jewish life, along with Hebrew reading, prayer skills and modern Hebrew basics. For more information about our curriculum clickhere. Weekend family living and learning two to three times per month: Each month all students have an opportunity to bring their learning alive by practicing their classroom learning in a live Shabbat or holiday context. Student learning is reinforced with spirited family Shabbat services, potluck meals, Shabbat morning activities, holiday celebrations, and family community service projects. Bnei Mitzvah Institute Our Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah students and families join our innovative B'nei Mitzvah Institute. Students study with our rabbi, hazzan and other Institute families, exploring issues and texts related to this crucial rite of passage. We help our families to see the Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the context of a full and ongoing commitment to Jewish life. For more information about our Hebrew school curriculum clickhere.
